The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested Nigerian national Samuel Ugberaese following his extradition from Nigeria over an alleged international romance fraud operation targeting victims across the United States and other countries.
American authorities disclosed that Ugberaese is facing charges linked to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to launder proceeds obtained from the alleged scam network. Prosecutors accused him and several associates of deceiving victims through online romantic relationships and manipulating them into sending money under false pretences.
According to court filings, investigators claimed the suspects operated sophisticated schemes involving fake identities, emotional manipulation, and fabricated stories designed to convince victims to transfer large sums of money. Authorities alleged that the funds were moved through several financial channels to disguise their origin.
The indictment further alleged that Ugberaese worked alongside co-defendant Oluwadamilare Kolaogunbule, a naturalised U.S. citizen, to process financial transactions through multiple bank accounts connected to purported export businesses. Prosecutors believe the accounts were used to conceal and transfer proceeds linked to the alleged fraud activities.
A federal grand jury reportedly filed the indictment in January 2021, while a U.S. magistrate judge ordered Ugberaese to remain in custody pending trial proceedings.
Before his arrest, Ugberaese was widely known on social media, where he projected a luxury lifestyle and gained attention for his lavish public appearances. His online presence had attracted significant followers prior to the legal troubles.
The latest development adds to growing international cooperation between Nigerian and American law enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime, romance scams, and financial fraud schemes targeting victims across multiple countries.
