Former Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has rejected bribery and corruption allegations during proceedings at a UK court, insisting she never abused her office.
Testifying before the Southwark Crown Court, the 65-year-old stated that she consistently resisted corrupt practices while in office and maintained transparency in her dealings
Prosecutors allege that certain Nigerian businessmen financed luxury expenses on her behalf, including high-end shopping and property renovations in the UK.
However, Alison-Madueke argued that such costs were tied to official duties and were later reimbursed by the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company.
She explained that logistical arrangements during her tenure required structured support, leading to the creation of a service company to manage official engagements abroad. According to her, payments for travel, accommodation, and transportation were necessary for her responsibilities.
Alison-Madueke also denied knowledge of any illicit cash transactions allegedly linked to her, including claims involving a chauffeur. She firmly stated that she neither requested nor received bribes.
The court also heard testimonies about her professional rise, including her career at Shell, where she became one of the top female executives in Nigeria’s oil sector.
Co-defendants in the case include Olatimbo Ayinde and Doye Agama, both of whom have also denied charges related to bribery and conspiracy. Proceedings are ongoing.
