A United States-based diaspora organisation, Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group (NDMG-USA), has warned of possible legal action against a US lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels, over controversial remarks concerning Nigeria’s security situation.

In a statement released by its president, Cosmas Collins, the group described Daniels’ comments as offensive and lacking credible evidence. The lawmaker had reportedly accused the Sultan of Sokoto of being complicit in insecurity and called for the removal of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.

The group strongly defended the Sultan, highlighting his longstanding role in fostering peace, unity, and religious harmony across Nigeria. It stressed that allegations against such a respected traditional figure without proof were defamatory and capable of damaging national cohesion.

NDMG-USA also expressed concern that the remarks could negatively impact Nigeria’s international image and heighten tensions both locally and abroad.

Collins warned that failure to issue a retraction and apology could result in legal proceedings being initiated in the United States.

While acknowledging global concern about insecurity in Nigeria, the group urged foreign officials to ensure their statements are fact-based and sensitive to the country’s complexities.

On the call for Matawalle’s removal, the group maintained that public office holders should be held accountable, but any demands for dismissal must be supported by verifiable evidence rather than unproven claims.

NDMG-USA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s reputation globally and called for responsible and constructive international engagement on the country’s internal challenges.
