Diaspora Group Faults South-East Leaders Over Lack of Coordinated Push on Kanu’s Detention

A United States–based advocacy organisation has criticised political leaders from Nigeria’s South-East over what it describes as their failure to present a united and visible front on the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group, Ambassadors for Self Determination USA, said in a statement issued from Washington, D.C., that recent comments credited to senior federal officials underscored Abuja’s rigid posture on separatist agitations, while exposing what it called the absence of effective counter-engagement from elected leaders in the region.

According to the organisation, repeated public pronouncements from top government figures suggest little willingness at the federal level to reconsider its handling of the Biafra question or Kanu’s case. It argued that this reality makes coordinated political advocacy from the South-East more critical than ever.

The group maintained that South-East governors, lawmakers and other political office holders have yet to articulate a clear, collective strategy capable of influencing national policy or sustaining international attention on the matter.

It further warned that disjointed leadership responses have weakened advocacy efforts and limited the pressure required to open meaningful dialogue. Without a common position, the organisation said, regional concerns risk being sidelined in national decision-making.

Beyond Kanu’s detention, the advocacy group pointed to broader governance and security challenges across parts of the South-East, including economic disruptions and recurring tensions linked to protests and enforcement actions. It called for policies that prioritise consultation and inclusive dialogue to prevent further alienation of local communities.

The organisation urged residents of the region to remain committed to peaceful and lawful civic participation, especially as future elections approach. It encouraged voters to closely examine leadership accountability, stressing that long-term political progress depends on unity, transparency and sustained, non-violent engagement.

Ambassadors for Self Determination USA concluded by reaffirming its support for peaceful efforts to address long-standing political grievances, calling for renewed dialogue anchored on justice, inclusion and respect for fundamental rights.
