China has restated its commitment to assisting Nigeria in its fight against terrorism as both countries move to deepen their longstanding diplomatic and economic partnership. The assurance was delivered by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in Abuja.
According to the Chinese envoy, relations between both nations have entered a new phase of accelerated cooperation, driven by shared priorities in security, trade, investment, and industrial development. He emphasised that Beijing and Abuja have consistently backed each other on matters affecting their national interests, a foundation he described as crucial for their growing strategic alignment.
Ambassador Yu outlined China’s readiness to introduce zero-tariff treatment for selected Nigerian exports, a move expected to boost bilateral trade and support Nigeria’s manufacturing and non-oil sectors. He added that both countries were already preparing to mark 55 years of diplomatic relations and the 2026 China-Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges, initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural and people-to-people links.
The ambassador stressed that enhanced cooperation would not only reinforce political trust but also deliver economic and social benefits to citizens of both countries. He noted that China intends to work closely with Nigeria on security challenges, describing counter-terrorism support as a key pillar of the partnership.
Foreign Minister Tuggar welcomed China’s commitments and expressed Nigeria’s continued adherence to the one-China principle. He pledged that the Nigerian government would push for deeper engagement with Beijing across strategic sectors, particularly as both countries pursue new opportunities for cooperation.
The renewed assurances come at a time when Nigeria is seeking broader international support to tackle insecurity, diversify its economy, and expand foreign investment. China remains one of Nigeria’s most significant development partners, especially in infrastructure, trade, and defence collaboration.
