Head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has stepped up efforts to attract foreign-born talents eligible to represent Nigeria as he reshapes the squad ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

The Malian tactician has already secured commitments from defenders Felix Agu and Ryan Alebiosu, as well as Arthur Okonkwo of Wrexham AFC. Emmanuel Fernandez is also set to switch allegiance to Nigeria after impressing at Rangers FC.

Chelle emphasised that selection will remain performance-driven, noting that only players who strengthen competition and align with his tactical vision will be considered.

Fernandez, born in London to Nigerian parents, has been in fine form in Scotland, netting four goals in 17 league appearances and earning a club monthly award. He was reportedly linked with Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window.

Nigeria’s bronze finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations highlighted the growing role of dual-nationality players, with stars such as Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman playing key roles.

With competition intensifying, Chelle’s recruitment push signals a deliberate strategy to blend locally developed prospects with overseas-based professionals to deepen squad quality and tactical flexibility.
