Jamaican communities are receiving a major boost thanks to the remarkable efforts of the Canadian diaspora, which has mobilized more than CAD$3 million in relief for areas devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

The funds were raised through a combination of online campaigns, benefit concerts, and community initiatives spearheaded by Jamaicans living across Canada. Notably, a benefit concert on November 6 at the Jamaican Canadian Association in Toronto generated over CAD$51,000, while an online fundraising drive collected more than CAD$650,000 in just two weeks.

A highlight of the campaign was the Harmonies of Hope concert held on December 10 under the patronage of Dr. Wes Hall, Chancellor of the University of Toronto, and Dr. Donette Chin-Loy Chang, Chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University. The event raised an impressive CAD$2.3 million, working in collaboration with Food for the Poor Canada, Sandals Foundation, and Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation.

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, praised the Canadian diaspora for their leadership and compassion, noting that their contributions are already providing tangible support to families in need. He emphasized that the efforts reflect the enduring bond between Jamaica and its overseas communities.

Tourism Director Donovan White highlighted the significant impact the funds will have on humanitarian assistance, community restoration, and long-term rebuilding projects, including homes and infrastructure. Angella Bennett, Regional Director for Canada, commended the organizers for producing a successful concert that combined relief efforts with Jamaica’s rich musical heritage.

The campaign underscores the power of diaspora communities in driving meaningful change, demonstrating that geographic distance does not diminish their commitment to supporting their homeland.
