The Beninese diaspora community in Nigeria has thrown its weight behind presidential candidate Romuald Wadagni and his running mate Mariam Chabi Talata ahead of the country’s April 12 presidential election.
The endorsement was led by former president of the Benin diaspora in Nigeria, Hounkpafi Honore, who described the ticket as capable of sustaining the country’s economic progress. He pointed to Wadagni’s record as finance minister, noting that his policies helped stabilise and grow the national economy.
Honore also highlighted the role of the diaspora in the upcoming vote, stating that eligible citizens living abroad would participate from multiple countries, including Nigeria. He confirmed that designated voting centres have been arranged in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan to accommodate voters.
He further stressed the longstanding cultural and historical ties between Nigeria and the Benin Republic, urging nationals abroad to remain united and actively support the electoral process.
Speaking on the preparations, Benin’s ambassador to Nigeria, Berenice Gnansounou Bankole, said the inclusion of diaspora voting aligns with constitutional provisions aimed at broadening democratic participation.
She added that Nigeria is home to a significant population of Beninese citizens, estimated to be between one and two million people.
Addressing concerns about security, the envoy expressed confidence in the country’s electoral system, noting that elections in Benin have historically been conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.
