A coalition of Azerbaijani diaspora organisations has formally appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump, raising concerns over recent comments made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, which they describe as biased and misleading.
In a series of letters sent to Washington, the groups argued that the mayor’s statements, shared publicly on social media, unfairly portrayed Azerbaijan and failed to reflect established international legal standards. The organisations said such remarks risk distorting public perception and undermining diplomatic efforts.
The appeal was jointly signed by several diaspora bodies operating across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, including cultural and advocacy groups that represent Azerbaijani communities abroad. They stressed that diaspora members have consistently taken an active role in defending national interests and promoting what they describe as factual narratives about their country.
According to the signatories, the timing of the comments is particularly sensitive, as ongoing international efforts are focused on stabilising relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They warned that public statements perceived as one-sided could complicate diplomatic engagement and weaken confidence in the peace process.
The groups further maintained that Azerbaijan has taken steps toward reintegrating ethnic Armenian residents in the Karabakh region, including initiatives aimed at ensuring security, civil rights, and economic inclusion. They insisted that these measures align with international legal frameworks and denied allegations of targeted violence against civilians.
In their correspondence, the organisations also referenced the historical tragedy of the Khojaly massacre, noting that it remains insufficiently addressed at the international level. They argued that such unresolved issues continue to shape the perspectives of Azerbaijanis worldwide.
The diaspora representatives urged President Trump to take note of what they described as unfounded accusations and to ensure that U.S. discourse on the region remains balanced and grounded in verified information.
They concluded by calling for responsible public communication from global leaders, warning that politically charged narratives could hinder reconciliation efforts and destabilise an already fragile geopolitical environment.
