ActionSA Mobilises Protest Over Controversial Igbo ‘King’ Installation in South Africa

Tensions are rising in South Africa’s Eastern Cape as political group ActionSA prepares to lead a protest against the reported installation of a Nigerian traditional ruler in the region.

The controversy centres on Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, who was allegedly crowned “Igwe Ndigbo” during a ceremony held in East London. The title is traditionally used to designate a leader within Igbo communities, but its adoption in this context has sparked strong objections from local authorities.

ActionSA has condemned the move, describing it as unlawful and provocative. The party says it will mobilise supporters for a street march, warning that the development risks undermining South Africa’s recognised traditional leadership structures.

Traditional leaders in the Eastern Cape have also rejected the installation, distancing themselves from the event and insisting it violates established customs and legal provisions governing chieftaincy matters in the country.

Authorities noted that the area where the coronation reportedly took place falls under the jurisdiction of an existing traditional kingdom, making the emergence of a parallel leadership structure particularly sensitive.

Government officials have expressed concern over the incident, with calls for intervention from national authorities, including diplomatic and law enforcement bodies, to address the situation.

They emphasised that South Africa has clearly defined legal processes for recognising traditional leaders and warned that bypassing these procedures could threaten social cohesion.

Meanwhile, community leaders have urged calm, cautioning that unresolved tensions could escalate if the matter is not handled swiftly and within the framework of the law.
