Thirteen Nigerian nationals have been deported from Mozambique without formal charges, sparking diplomatic concern and outrage among diaspora authorities. The individuals were part of a larger group of 42 Nigerians earlier arrested in the capital, Maputo, over alleged documentation issues.
The deportees arrived in Lagos on Friday via a commercial flight, maintaining that most of them held valid residence permits at the time of their arrest. They described the operation as arbitrary, claiming they were picked up from their businesses without clear justification.
Meanwhile, 29 Nigerians remain in detention in Mozambique, raising fears over their safety and legal status. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has criticised the development, calling it a violation of due process and urging immediate diplomatic engagement.
The Commission stressed that while Nigerians abroad must respect host country laws, authorities must also uphold legal standards and avoid unjust treatment.
It has called on Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene swiftly to secure the release of those still detained and ensure accountability.
