The Abia State Government is set to engage Nigerians living abroad in efforts to attract investment, expand export opportunities and strengthen the state's economic development during a four-day diaspora gathering scheduled for December 18 to 21, 2026.

The event, organised by the Abia State Diaspora Commission, will bring together indigenes living overseas, local producers, farmers and government officials to explore ways of connecting international expertise and resources with development opportunities in the state.

The commission's head, Rev. Dr. Ambassador Annie Onu, said the programme would allow visitors to assess developments in Abia and identify areas where they could contribute their skills, professional experience and financial resources.

Activities will begin with a solidarity walk on December 18, followed by engagements with local producers and organic farmers. The programme will conclude on December 21 with a meeting with Governor Alex Otti to discuss how diaspora contributions can support the state's development priorities.

Onu also identified improved air connectivity as an important area for collaboration, noting that stronger transport links could encourage investment and facilitate trade.

Expanding international markets for locally produced goods will be another major focus. Products such as turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, plantain, beans, garri and bitter kola were highlighted as having export potential, particularly when properly processed and packaged.

The commission also hopes to improve the international competitiveness of locally manufactured products, including shoes and bags. Diaspora participants are expected to explore opportunities to introduce these goods to overseas markets, establish export connections and help local businesses generate additional income and foreign exchange.

Beyond economic development, the commission is working to improve the safety of Abians travelling abroad. Onu disclosed that it was establishing relationships with foreign embassies to strengthen assistance for citizens who encounter difficulties overseas.

She cautioned young people against fraudulent recruitment agents who offer jobs that do not correspond with the visas issued to prospective migrants. She advised intending travellers to verify employment opportunities through the commission before making travel arrangements.

Plans are also underway to organise safe-migration workshops and establish diaspora chapters in cities with significant Abia communities.

Onu urged residents to welcome returning indigenes and participate in the initiative, emphasising the importance of cooperation between the government, local communities and the diaspora in achieving the programme's objectives.
