The African Action Congress (AAC) has urged Nigerians, including members of the diaspora, to support efforts targeting police impunity, following revelations of alleged human rights abuses at the Tiger Base police facility in Owerri, Imo State.
In a statement, the party highlighted findings from a recent investigation that reportedly documents systematic torture, unlawful detentions, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings over the past three years. AAC described the facility as a symbol of entrenched impunity within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
The party called for the immediate closure of Tiger Base and other illegal detention centers nationwide. It demanded that officers and commanders implicated in abuses, particularly during periods when multiple deaths occurred, face prosecution. Additionally, AAC urged independent investigations into all allegations, including autopsies for victims, and comprehensive reparations for affected families.
AAC also emphasized the importance of civil society and diaspora involvement in holding authorities accountable, insisting that police reform must be genuine, people-centered, and subject to strong civilian oversight.
National Publicity Secretary Rex Elanu stated that continued silence from authorities risks normalizing atrocities and undermines trust in law enforcement. The party reaffirmed its commitment to CAPTI (Coalition Against Police Tiger Base Impunity) until justice is achieved and perpetrators are held accountable.
“This is a pivotal moment for Nigeria,” the statement read. “The fight against Tiger Base impunity is a fight for life, dignity, and the rule of law. Nigerians at home and abroad must not look away.”
The AAC called on workers, students, professional bodies, faith-based groups, and all citizens to actively pressure the government to implement these reforms without delay.
