A Federal High Court in Abuja has arraigned 24 individuals, including 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians, over allegations of illegal lithium mining in Nasarawa State.

The defendants were brought before the court after being arrested during an enforcement operation targeting unauthorized mining activities in Kokona Local Government Area. Authorities allege that the suspects were carrying out mining operations without the necessary approvals and licences required under Nigerian law.

According to prosecutors, the accused were operating within an area covered by a legally recognized exploration licence held by a registered mining company. The government contends that the activities violated provisions of Nigeria’s mining and miscellaneous offences laws, which prescribe severe penalties for unlawful mineral exploitation.

At the court proceedings, defence counsel applied for bail, assuring the judge that the defendants would make themselves available throughout the trial process. The application was granted, with the court directing the accused persons to surrender their international passports and identification documents pending the determination of the case.

The court did not impose financial bail conditions or require sureties. Instead, responsibility was placed on the defence team to ensure the appearance of the defendants whenever required by the court.

Speaking after the hearing, the prosecution said the decision to grant bail fell within the court’s discretion, while expressing hope that none of the accused persons would fail to appear for subsequent proceedings.

The case has been adjourned until June 18, 2026, when the trial is expected to commence.

Meanwhile, officials of the Mining Marshals reiterated their commitment to tackling illegal mining across the country. They stressed that sustained enforcement efforts are necessary to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources, promote lawful operations, and strengthen confidence in the mining sector.
