A United States federal court has handed a 15-year prison sentence to a Nigerian citizen, Saheed Sunday Owolabi, after finding him guilty of orchestrating an extensive wire fraud and money laundering operation that targeted victims across the country.
The conviction followed a jury trial in which Owolabi was found culpable of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to launder illicit funds. Authorities said the scheme generated more than $1.5 million through deceptive online tactics.
Investigators revealed that the operation largely revolved around romance scams. Owolabi allegedly assumed false identities online, including posing as a woman, to build trust with victims before persuading them to transfer money and disclose sensitive financial details.
Beyond direct fraud, the convict and his network reportedly exploited victims’ bank accounts to move and conceal proceeds from other criminal activities. In one instance, over $120,000 was siphoned from a victim based in North Carolina.
Law enforcement officials described the case as part of a broader crackdown on cross-border financial crimes. A senior FBI official noted that the conviction reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle international fraud syndicates that prey on individuals within the United States.
During sentencing, the presiding judge stated that Owolabi held a central leadership role within a coordinated criminal network. The court also highlighted the scale of financial damage inflicted on victims and the level of organisation involved in executing the scheme.
Prosecutors supported their case with digital evidence, including materials retrieved from the defendant’s mobile device, which reportedly showed how proceeds from the fraud were spent.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, while federal prosecutors in North Carolina handled the case. Officials say the outcome reinforces the U.S. justice system’s stance against financial crimes involving international actors.
