The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has called on countries to prioritise economic opportunities for women, describing such measures as essential to sustainable national development. She stressed that empowering women economically remains a global imperative.

Mohammed made the call during a high-level engagement at the United Nations House in New York, where she received the Founder of Women Leaders Support Advancement (WLSA), Deborah Jan Hornecker, alongside members of the organisation and its diaspora leadership.
She commended Nigeria’s efforts to support vulnerable and underserved women and praised WLSA for its grassroots-driven initiatives aimed at improving women’s livelihoods. According to her, inclusive social and economic systems are critical to reducing inequality.
Mohammed described WLSA’s interventions as timely and impactful, urging the organisation to sustain its humanitarian work. She noted that empowering women contributes directly to economic stability, social cohesion, and national progress.

In her response, Hornecker reaffirmed WLSA’s commitment to advancing the welfare of disadvantaged women. She emphasised that women are central to development and called for stronger global partnerships to support grassroots empowerment initiatives.
