Katsina State has unveiled a series of model smart schools aimed at providing free, world-class education to children from rural and underserved communities. Governor Dikko Radda stated that these institutions are designed to give every child an equal chance to succeed academically, regardless of their background.
The governor made the announcement on Sunday while leading a delegation of European Union envoys on a visit to Dumurkul Model Secondary School in Daura, one of three modern schools recently established across the state’s three political zones.
“These schools provide opportunities for children from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds. Admission is merit-based, focusing on students from public schools and rural communities,” Radda said. He emphasized that the initiative aims to prepare students to compete globally in the next two to three decades.
Each school is equipped with 24-hour electricity, ICT-enabled classrooms, internet access, and hostels. All educational services, including accommodation and learning materials, are provided completely free to students.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, said the Dumurkul school is nearly complete and will be commissioned within two weeks. Students are already enrolled, and qualified teachers have been recruited.
Jibia added that the schools are built with state-of-the-art teaching resources and are expected to expand to other zones in the near future. He described the project as a model for modern educational infrastructure in the region.
European Union envoys, including the Netherlands and Egyptian ambassadors, commended the state government for its commitment to improving educational access and preserving cultural heritage. They praised the integration of modern learning with local traditions.
After the school visit, the delegation toured the historic Kusugu Well in Daura, highlighting Katsina’s effort to balance educational progress with the preservation of its rich cultural legacy. The envoys described the cultural showcase as a remarkable testament to the state’s history and traditions.
