A Nigerian national resident in the United Kingdom, Adeleke Adelani, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for unlawfully causing the termination of his former partner’s pregnancy.

The court heard that the incident occurred in 2020 when Adelani invited the woman, who was nine weeks pregnant at the time, to his residence in Letterkenny under the guise of discussing the pregnancy. Once there, he coerced her into taking medication that resulted in the loss of the pregnancy.

During sentencing at Letterkenny Circuit Court, the victim described the emotional and psychological toll of the incident, stating that although she had chosen to forgive him, the act deprived her of her sense of security and the future she had begun to imagine for her unborn child.

In a letter presented before the court, Adelani accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to the victim.

Presiding judge, John Aylmer, handed down an 11-year sentence, suspending the final two years, for unlawfully terminating the pregnancy. He also imposed a five-year sentence, with the last year suspended, for assault causing harm. Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Adelani is already serving a separate seven-year prison term for an unrelated offence
