Ugo Ugochukwu Makes History as First American to Win FIA Formula 3 Championship
Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made history after winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship at the season finale in Madrid, becoming the first American to claim the prestigious junior single-seater title.
The 19-year-old secured the championship after finishing second in the final feature race at the newly introduced Madring circuit. Driving for Campos Racing, Ugo entered the decisive race level on points with British driver Freddie Slater.
Ugo finished behind Tuukka Taponen, earning enough points to move clear of Slater and end the season as champion. He finished the championship with 159 points, ahead of Slater’s 145.
His title-winning campaign included two race victories and seven podium finishes, marking a significant turnaround from his debut Formula 3 season, when he finished 16th overall.
The championship represents a major step forward in Ugo’s career and brings him closer to his ambition of competing in Formula 1.
As the 2026 FIA Formula 3 champion, Ugo earns 30 FIA Super Licence points, strengthening his position on the pathway toward securing the points required to compete in Formula 1.
Under FIA regulations, the reigning Formula 3 champion cannot return to defend the title, meaning Ugo will now be expected to pursue the next stage of his single-seater career, with Formula 2 a potential destination.
His breakthrough in 2026 caps a rapid rise for the young driver, who has steadily improved since entering Formula 3 and established himself as one of the leading talents in the championship.
Ugo’s victory also adds another milestone to a career that began in karting and has taken him through several junior racing categories in Europe and beyond.
With the Formula 3 title now secured, attention will turn to Ugo’s next move as he continues his pursuit of a future Formula 1 seat.
