The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its offices in Abuja and Lagos will not open to the public on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day in the United States.

In a public notice issued on Sunday, the mission confirmed that both the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will suspend routine services for the federal holiday. Regular operations are expected to resume the following business day.

Presidents’ Day is a national holiday in the U.S., marked annually on the third Monday of February. It was initially created to commemorate the birthday of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

Over time, the observance has expanded beyond Washington’s legacy to honour all American presidents and their contributions to the nation’s development and governance. The holiday now serves as a broader reflection on presidential leadership and its impact on U.S. history.

The U.S. Mission also highlighted Washington’s role in establishing the original “Badge of Military Merit,” a decoration that later evolved into the Purple Heart, one of the country’s most recognised military honours.

Officials noted that Presidents’ Day not only celebrates domestic leadership but also acknowledges the influence of U.S. presidents on global affairs.

Applicants and visitors with scheduled appointments at the embassy or consulate are advised to take note of the closure and adjust their plans accordingly. Emergency services for U.S. citizens are typically available during holidays.
