Two Nigerian nationals have been placed in custody in Northern Cyprus following the discovery of suspected drugs and other prohibited items in their residence, authorities have confirmed.
The suspects, identified as Jesutimileyin Bolarinwa Adelasa and Excellent Chizorom Anthony Okoro, were brought before a court after a police operation uncovered narcotics, bullet casings, and what was described as a training-type grenade at their apartment.
According to law enforcement officials, Adelasa was initially stopped by officers during a routine patrol in Lefkoşa on April 22, where a small quantity of substance believed to be cannabis was found on him. The arrest led to a follow-up search of his residence in the Taşkinköy area, where additional suspected drugs and related items were recovered.
During the search, officers also reportedly found a non-functional grenade, a bullet casing, and grinding equipment believed to have been used for drug preparation. Okoro, who was present at the residence, was subsequently arrested after similar items were allegedly linked to him.
In court, prosecutors stated that both men were residing in the country without valid documentation. Authorities indicated that Adelasa had overstayed since early 2022, while Okoro’s legal status expired in late 2023.
The court heard that all seized materials have been sent for forensic examination as part of ongoing investigations. Prosecutors requested extended detention to allow for further inquiries, which the presiding judge granted.
Both defendants denied involvement in criminal activities. Okoro maintained that the grenade was acquired as a decorative item and insisted he was not involved in drug trafficking. He also cited financial hardship and lack of legal employment as reasons for his undocumented status.
Adelasa, on his part, told the court that some of the items found in the apartment belonged to a former roommate who had passed away.
The case has been adjourned pending the outcome of forensic analysis and further police investigations.
