Nigerian basketball coach Rena Wakama has received international recognition following her induction into the Hall of Fame of Wake Forest High School in North Carolina, United States, as part of its 2026 class.
Wakama, who currently leads Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, was among a select group of honourees celebrated for outstanding contributions in sports and community impact. Her recognition highlights the growing global influence of Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly in elite sports leadership.
Reacting to the honour, Wakama described it as a shared achievement shaped by faith, mentorship, and collective support throughout her journey.
Wakama made history in 2023 when she became the first female head coach of D’Tigress. Under her leadership, Nigeria secured a record-extending AfroBasket title, reinforcing the country’s dominance in African women’s basketball.
Her success extended to the global stage at the 2024 Olympic Games, where D’Tigress reached the quarter-finals—an unprecedented feat for any African basketball team, male or female. The milestone further cemented her reputation as one of the leading figures in international coaching.
Following Nigeria’s continental triumph, the team received national honours and financial rewards from the federal government, recognising their contribution to the country’s sporting prestige.
Wakama’s Hall of Fame induction underscores the continued impact of Nigerian professionals abroad and reflects how diaspora excellence is shaping global narratives in sports and beyond.
