President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, stressing that transparent and fair elections remain the cornerstone of democracy.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja shortly after administering the oath of office on Thursday, Tinubu said Amupitan’s appointment recently confirmed by the Senate reflects the confidence of both the executive and legislative arms in his competence and integrity.

“I urge you, Professor Amupitan, to protect the integrity of our elections, strengthen INEC’s institutional capacity, and ensure credible polls,” the President said. “Your first major test will be the Anambra governorship election in November 2025. Approach it with transparency, patriotism, and absolute fairness.”

Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s democracy, sustained since 1999, has advanced through reforms and lessons from past challenges. He emphasized that credibility and transparency at every stage voter registration, campaigns, voting, and result collation are vital to maintaining public trust.

“No electoral system is perfect, but we must continue to improve ours,” he said. “Elections safeguard the people’s right to choose their leaders and shape their future. We must keep innovating to strengthen public confidence in the process.”
The President also urged Amupitan to prioritise inclusivity, non-violence, and accountability in future elections, saying that the success of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the trust of its citizens.

Professor Amupitan’s appointment comes at a crucial time, with INEC under pressure to enhance transparency and efficiency ahead of upcoming state and national elections.
