Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s national development under the leadership of i
ts newly sworn-in President, John Dramani Mahama.
During the inauguration ceremony in Accra, President Tinubu celebrated Mahama's victory and expressed optimism for closer ties between the two nations. Highlighting the shared vision for prosperity, Tinubu described Mahama as a leader of “patriotic vision and substance,” emphasizing his deep love for Ghana and its people.
“Even when we disagree, we must choose the path of peaceful dialogue,” Tinubu stated. “Your new President is a man of substance and patriotic vision. Mahama and I share a deep friendship, and I assure you that Nigeria will always stand by Ghana’s side in times of need. Together, we will work to bring prosperity to our nations.”
Tinubu also called for unity across the African continent, urging leaders to focus on self-reliance and the rejection of external detractors. He praised Ghana’s democratic achievements, describing the peaceful transition of power as a beacon of hope for West Africa and the African diaspora.
“The election of Mahama and other past Ghanaian presidents demonstrates that in West Africa, we are capable of democratic and productive governance,” Tinubu said. “It is time for the critics of Africa to recognize our strides. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build resilient economies for our people.”
In his inaugural address, President Mahama expressed gratitude for the presence of African leaders, including Tinubu. He pledged to strengthen Ghana’s relationships with Nigeria and other Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) nations.
Mahama’s victory, with 56.3% of the vote, marks the end of the New Patriotic Party's two-term rule under outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo. His opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on December 8, 2024, congratulating Mahama on his success.
As Mahama embarks on his term, the African diaspora watches with anticipation, hopeful for a renewed partnership between Ghana and Nigeria that could inspire progress across the continent.
