President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola as Nigeria grapples with two disturbing security incidents, the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and a violent attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
Tinubu had been set to depart Abuja for the G20 Summit in Johannesburg before proceeding to Luanda for a continental meeting. However, the President aborted the journey following urgent security alerts indicating the need for immediate action at home.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu has ordered a significant reinforcement of security personnel across Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State after armed attackers stormed a church meeting, killing several worshippers and abducting others, including the pastor.
The President directed security operatives to pursue the perpetrators aggressively and restore calm to the community.
The situation in Kebbi also remains tense after the abduction of schoolgirls by armed groups. Tinubu is awaiting a full briefing from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited the state on his behalf, alongside intelligence updates from the police and the Department of State Services. He reaffirmed his instruction for an urgent rescue mission to ensure the safe return of all abducted students.
The twin attacks have deepened public concern over rising violence in the northwest and north-central regions, prompting renewed demands for stronger government intervention. Tinubu’s decision to remain in the country signals a shift toward direct oversight of the unfolding security crisis as authorities intensify search-and-rescue operations and community protection measures.
