President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu following the successful hosting of the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). The event, which took place from January 7 to 11, 2026, transformed Lagos into a hub for Africa’s biggest stars. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the Governor for providing a vibrant and safe environment for delegates and artists from across the continent.

The President noted that the success of Nigerian musicians at the awards is a testament to the country's thriving creative ecosystem. High-profile artists like Rema, who won Artiste of the Year, and Burna Boy, who took home Album of the Year, were specifically highlighted for their global impact. Other winners included Shallipopi, Phyno, and Yemi Alade, showcasing the diversity and depth of talent currently dominating the African music scene.

Lagos was designated as the official host city by the African Union Commission, and the President commended the state for proving its capacity as the continent's creative capital. He emphasized that global platforms like AFRIMA are essential for allowing African talent to compete at the highest level. The President, a former recipient of the "Pillar of Art and Culture in Africa" award himself, reiterated his administration's commitment to supporting the creative arts.

According to the President, the creative economy—including music, film, and fashion—is a vital tool for job creation and tourism. He urged Nigerian artists to continue using their platform to inspire hope and unity, noting that their work projects Nigerian culture to a global audience. The event’s success further cements Lagos's reputation as a premier destination for major international gatherings, following its recent hosting of the E1 powerboat race and GITEX 2025..

The 9th edition of AFRIMA saw participation from over 1,200 stakeholders and artists representing 48 African countries. The festivities included a music business summit and a massive "Music Village" concert that drew over 20,000 fans. The President concluded by assuring the youth that his government remains dedicated to empowering creative talents and ensuring that the soul of African culture continues to have a strong, global voice.
