Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticized the Nigerian Police over the arraignment of a businesswoman accused in connection with a N250 million debt-related allegation involving a government minister. Sowore described the action as disproportionate and potentially reflective of institutional overreach.

He argued that civil disputes, particularly those involving financial disagreements, should primarily be addressed through civil litigation channels rather than criminal prosecution. According to him, criminalizing such matters may discourage whistleblowing and limit public scrutiny of public officials.
The case has sparked public debate on issues of defamation, accountability, and the boundaries between civil and criminal proceedings. Legal practitioners have offered differing perspectives, with some defending the police action while others question the appropriateness of criminal charges in financial disputes.
Sowore further called for transparency in the handling of the matter, urging authorities to ensure due process and protect constitutional rights. He emphasized that public confidence in law enforcement depends on fairness and impartiality.

As proceedings continue, the case is expected to test broader questions about freedom of expression, institutional neutrality, and the role of law enforcement in politically sensitive disputes.
