South Africa Orders Israeli Envoy to Leave Amid Diplomatic Fallout

South Africa has instructed Israel’s highest-ranking diplomat in the country to depart within 72 hours, formally ending his posting after declaring him unwelcome under diplomatic rules.
The decision, announced by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, affects Ariel Seidman, who serves as Israel’s chargé d’affaires in Pretoria and currently heads the Israeli mission.
Government officials said the expulsion followed conduct they believe fell outside acceptable diplomatic behaviour and interfered with South Africa’s internal authority.
Among the issues raised were public communications attributed to the Israeli mission that officials say contained disrespectful references to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Authorities also faulted the embassy for allegedly bypassing established channels when senior Israeli figures visited parts of South Africa without prior notification to the foreign ministry.
South Africa maintained that such actions violate international diplomatic conventions and weaken the mutual trust required to sustain formal relations between states.
The development adds to already strained ties between both countries, which have been under pressure since South Africa took a firm stance against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and initiated legal proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
