Sen. Ningi Says Senate Can Vote Openly on Real-Time E-Transmission

Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central has said the Senate can conduct an open and recorded vote on the issue of real-time electronic transmission of election results if the presiding officer permits it.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ningi said the law allows senators to publicly declare their positions, which would then be officially recorded.

He argued that the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act amendment stemmed from procedural lapses and inadequate briefing of lawmakers before the vote.

Ningi rejected claims that opposition to the amendment was driven by party politics, noting that support for electronic transmission cuts across party lines.

He added that greater transparency in legislative voting would help rebuild public trust in the National Assembly and Nigeria’s democratic process.
