President Bola Tinubu and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Sunday held talks on the growing security crisis in Nigeria, focusing on areas of collaboration and international support to address terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings in the northern region.

The conversation came as a United States delegation, including the US Ambassador to Nigeria and senior congressional officials, met with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja to discuss reports of religious persecution and escalating violence across the country.
Macron, in a message posted on X, affirmed France’s commitment to support Nigeria, stating that the French government would strengthen partnerships with Nigerian authorities and provide aid for affected populations, following a wave of attacks on schools and communities.
The discussions also coincided with Nigeria’s recent security measures, including the appointment of Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.) as Minister of Defence and the declaration of a nationwide security emergency to deploy additional personnel and protect schools, farms, and places of worship.

NSA Ribadu confirmed that the US delegation’s visit was part of ongoing bilateral consultations on counter-terrorism, regional stability, and strategic security cooperation. He emphasised the importance of deepening trust and collaboration between both nations.
“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria. I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North,” Macron said.
“At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator,” he added.
The Federal Government has also reportedly secured the release of 100 schoolchildren abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic School in Niger State, while security agencies continue rescue operations and enhanced deployment across vulnerable states. Former presidential aspirant Gbenga Hashim welcomed Gen. Musa’s appointment, describing it as a crucial opportunity to deliver immediate results in restoring national security.
