Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of undermining Nigeria’s democracy amid controversy surrounding amendments to the Electoral Act.

Adebayo made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, reacting to the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 without approving a proposed amendment on real-time electronic transmission of results.

He claimed that the decision to remove the “real-time” provision was deliberate and capable of eroding public trust in the electoral process. According to him, such actions could destabilise the democratic system.

Adebayo further alleged that external influences played a role in the decision, describing the development as dangerous to national cohesion. He warned that weakening electoral safeguards could fuel unrest.

The Senate’s decision has sparked nationwide outrage, with civil society groups and political stakeholders calling for transparency and accountability in the amendment process.
