The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, has refused a request from the Rivers State House of Assembly to constitute a judicial panel to investigate Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The decision comes amid ongoing political tension in the state, following allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

According to a letter dated January 20, addressed to the Speaker of the House, Martins Amawhule, Justice Amadi cited an existing court order as the reason for declining the request. The letter emphasized that the court order legally prevents the Chief Judge from setting up any panel to probe the governor and his deputy at this time.

The Rivers State House of Assembly had initially sought the formation of a seven-member panel to investigate claims of misconduct involving Governor Fubara and his deputy. The move was seen as an attempt by the legislative arm to exercise its oversight functions, particularly in light of public concerns over accountability in state governance.

Political analysts say the refusal by the Chief Judge underscores the growing tension between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State. While the House of Assembly insists on pursuing the probe, the judiciary’s position highlights the limits of state institutions in navigating politically sensitive investigations.

Justice Amadi’s decision has already sparked reactions from lawmakers and political observers, many of whom are calling for clarity on the court order and the next steps in the ongoing political saga. The Rivers State political landscape is expected to remain tense as stakeholders await further developments.
