The Rivers State House of Assembly has alleged that it uncovered a plot to obtain a court order aimed at stopping the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The allegation was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dr. Enemi George.

According to the Assembly, the alleged plan involves seeking an ex parte court order from a Rivers State High Court sitting outside Port Harcourt, the state capital. Lawmakers said the move was intended to prevent the legislature from carrying out its constitutional responsibility.

The Assembly described the alleged plot as illegal and unconstitutional, citing provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly sections that prohibit judicial interference in impeachment proceedings. Lawmakers warned that such actions would amount to an attempt to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

The impeachment process was formally initiated last Thursday, following allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy. The House said the notices of allegations were duly served and that the process is being conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

Lawmakers urged the affected office holders to respond to the allegations through lawful and transparent means, rather than attempting to obstruct legislative proceedings through what they described as “subterranean moves.”
