Elderly residents of Oyo State on Tuesday received financial and healthcare support as the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, approved the disbursement of ₦50 million under the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), aimed at improving the welfare and wellbeing of senior citizens in the state.

The programme, themed “Finding Joy in Old Age,” was held at the Local Government Training School, Secretariat, Ibadan, as part of the nationwide rollout of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Social Investment Programme across the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and among security veterans.
Senator Oluremi, who is the National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, was represented at the event by the wife of the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Mrs Ajibike Lawal, while 250 elderly citizens aged 65 years and above benefited from the scheme in the state.
Under the intervention, each beneficiary received ₦200,000 alongside free medical check-ups and essential healthcare services, reflecting the initiative’s focus on holistic support beyond financial assistance.

The First Lady explained that the Oyo State intervention forms part of a ₦1.9 billion nationwide disbursement under the third edition of the scheme, with each state receiving ₦50 million to support 250 elderly beneficiaries.
“Our elderly citizens deserve care, dignity and appreciation for their years of contribution to nation-building. This programme is one of the ways we are saying that you matter and that you are not forgotten, especially during this festive season,” Senator Oluremi said.
“This initiative is not only about money; it is about promoting a happy, healthy and prosperous lifestyle for our senior citizens through financial support and access to healthcare services,” she added.
Speaking earlier, the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Toyin Balogun, commended the initiative as a demonstration of compassionate governance, while beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, describing it as a source of renewed hope and improved quality of life.
