Pope Leo XIV has publicly criticised the United States for its treatment of undocumented immigrants, describing current practices as “extremely disrespectful” and urging adherence to human dignity and justice.
Speaking from his papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff emphasised the importance of following legal procedures when addressing immigration issues. He highlighted that courts and proper legal channels exist to manage cases fairly.
The pope drew attention to immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for decades, contributing positively to society. He argued that deporting individuals who have built stable lives over 10, 15, or even 20 years without consideration is inhumane.
He praised a recent statement by U.S. bishops that condemned mass deportations and immigration raids, describing it as “very important” and urging Catholics to pay close attention to the ethical implications of current policies.
Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff in history, has consistently questioned whether certain government actions align with Catholic teachings. He has previously linked pro-life principles to the fair and compassionate treatment of all human beings.
Beyond immigration, the pontiff addressed the climate crisis, warning that political leaders have failed to act decisively despite clear evidence of floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events threatening vulnerable populations worldwide.
He cited the Paris Agreement as the most effective international framework for protecting people and the planet, stressing that it is the failure of political will, not the agreement itself, that has hindered progress.
Since his election earlier this year, Pope Leo XIV has adopted an increasingly vocal approach on global moral and social issues, calling for leadership that balances justice, compassion, and responsibility.
