Poland has intensified diplomatic engagement with Nigeria as Deputy Foreign Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski completed a series of high-level meetings in Abuja focused on security cooperation, economic partnerships, and multilateral relations.
Zajączkowski held talks with Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside senior officials from key ministries. The discussions centered on shared security concerns, global governance, and strengthening political and economic collaboration. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter principles, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful conflict resolution.
He underscored Poland’s support for Nigeria’s stabilisation efforts across Africa and highlighted the importance of maintaining an international system rooted in multilateralism, human rights, and the rule of law. The deputy minister also expressed confidence in the future of bilateral dialogue, emphasizing that deeper cooperation with Nigeria aligns with the interests of both Warsaw and the European Union.
During separate engagements, Zajączkowski met with several top Nigerian officials, including Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole; Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun; Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; and Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. Conversations covered joint efforts against terrorism and poverty, as well as emerging areas such as cybersecurity, counter-disinformation, digital innovation, energy, and transport.
The visit also featured interactions with academics, religious leaders, policy analysts, and members of the Polish community in Nigeria, including staff from the Polish Investment and Trade Agency in Lagos.
Zajączkowski’s mission comes days ahead of the EU–AU Summit, signalling Poland’s broader effort to strengthen its footprint in Sub-Saharan Africaa region increasingly important in global geopolitics. The trip also aimed to advance commercial ties, building on the momentum of the successful Polish–Nigerian Economic Forum held in Lagos earlier this year.
