Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alongside former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, have narrated their narrow escape following an alleged assassination attempt in Benin City, Edo State. The incident, which has generated widespread concern, reportedly occurred during a political engagement in the ancient city.

According to the two political figures, the situation escalated unexpectedly when unidentified individuals allegedly attempted to disrupt their movement. They described the development as both shocking and alarming, noting that it posed a serious threat not only to their personal safety but also to democratic engagement in the country.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that security operatives swiftly intervened, preventing what could have resulted in grave consequences. The prompt action of security personnel was credited with averting potential casualties and restoring calm to the area.

Obi expressed concern over the rising tension in Nigeria’s political landscape, emphasizing that politics should not become a do-or-die affair. He called for restraint, civility, and adherence to democratic principles, stressing that leadership must be anchored on peace and the protection of lives.

Oyegun also condemned the alleged attack, urging law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. Both leaders maintained that Nigeria’s democracy must be safeguarded against acts of violence and intimidation.
