Peter Obi Calls for Stronger Diaspora Engagement to Drive Nigeria’s Development
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigeria to develop stronger systems for engaging its citizens abroad and creating opportunities for them to contribute to the country’s growth.
Obi made the call after meeting with young Nigerian professionals in Washington, D.C., United States, where discussions centred on Nigeria’s challenges and the reforms needed to unlock its development potential.
Obi said Nigeria should create an environment where citizens can pursue their ambitions at home while also making it possible for those in the diaspora to return, invest and participate meaningfully in the economy.
The former Anambra State governor noted that his meeting with Nigerian professionals abroad highlighted the contributions Nigerians continue to make in fields including medicine, technology, engineering, law, education and business.
He maintained that Nigeria’s greatest strength remains its people, adding that the country could make significant progress if its human resources were effectively supported and its leadership institutions strengthened.
Obi also urged citizens to remain active in demanding accountability and better governance, stressing that building a country that works for everyone requires participation from both Nigerians at home and those living abroad.
His comments come amid growing discussions about how Nigeria can better harness the skills, investments and international experience of its diaspora community to support economic and national development.
