PDP Condemns Electoral Act 2026 Amendment, Alleges Threat to Democracy

The Peoples Democratic Party has strongly criticized the newly amended Electoral Act 2026, describing it as a direct act of treachery against Nigerians and a setback for democratic transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the opposition party accused the National Assembly of undermining public trust by weakening the mandatory electronic transmission of election results from polling units.

The amendment was recently signed into law by Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission unveiled the timetable for the 2027 elections.

According to the PDP, Nigerians overwhelmingly supported electronic transmission as a safeguard against electoral manipulation. The party described the Senate’s position and what it termed a “somersault” by the House of Representatives as anti-democratic.

The PDP maintained that weakening electronic transmission provisions could erode transparency and public confidence in the electoral process, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
