Opposition Realignment Clouds APC’s Path, Faces Internal Pressure

Political observers say the landscape for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential primaries is shifting dramatically as cracks emerge across major parties. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears confident of re‑nomination for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but internal disputes over zoning and candidate selection have raised questions about unity within its ranks. Opposing parties particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) are simultaneously grappling with leadership clashes and strategic realignments that complicate their competitive edge.

Inside the opposition, tensions are evident. The PDP has witnessed defections by some top figures and debates over alliances, even as some leaders resist formal coalition offers. Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the ADC, signalling a significant shift in political affiliations and opposition strategy. These developments have injected fresh uncertainty into what was expected to be a straightforward PDP‑LP challenge to APC dominance.
The Labour Party is striving to stabilise its trajectory with figures like Senator Datti Baba‑Ahmed declaring presidential ambitions, an effort to consolidate support after the exit of its 2023 candidate. Yet, internal debates and the departure of key operatives have left questions about the party’s cohesion and readiness for a nationwide campaign.
In response to speculation about manufactured divisions, some leaders accuse the ruling party of exploiting weaknesses within opposition ranks. They argue that efforts to create friction in rival parties provide APC with strategic leverage ahead of the critical primaries. Observers caution that without unified fronts, opposition parties risk fragmenting voter support and reinforcing the advantage of incumbency

As the countdown to the 2027 polls accelerates, the interplay of defection trends, coalition talks and intra‑party disputes will shape electoral fortunes. While APC seeks to present stability and continuity, the readiness of PDP, LP and ADC to rally cohesive campaigns remains unresolved creating a contest that could redefine Nigeria’s multiparty landscape long before ballots are cast.
