The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has issued a passionate call to the Federal and Delta State governments to address the neglect of Itsekiri coastal communities. During a tour of various oil fields, the monarch expressed deep concern that his people remain poor despite living on land that produces Nigeria’s oil wealth.

The monarch criticized oil companies for using what he termed "divide-and-rule" tactics to avoid their responsibilities to host communities. He noted that these practices have led to internal conflicts and allowed firms to ignore the lack of basic infrastructure in the region. The King insisted that the Itsekiri people deserve to see the benefits of the resources extracted from their soil.
In a stern warning, the Olu told oil companies not to mistake the peaceful nature of his people for a sign of weakness. He stated that the community is tired of hearing about production numbers and revenue charts that do not translate into better lives for the residents. For over 60 years, he argued, the people have waited for development that has yet to arrive.
The tour covered several riverine communities in Warri North, where the monarch saw firsthand the level of poverty and environmental decay. He urged the government to move beyond promises and execute visible projects that improve healthcare, education, and transportation in the creeks.

This call for action highlights the long-standing tension between oil-producing regions and the authorities in Nigeria. The monarch’s message serves as a reminder that sustainable peace in the Niger Delta can only be achieved through genuine development and respect for the people.
