Indigenes of Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State have petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun over an alleged attempt to shift the approved oil exploration site from Tongeji Island to another location within the state. The petition reflects growing concern among community leaders over conflicting information surrounding the project.

The petition, dated January 23, 2026, was signed by the Baamofin of Ipokia Kingdom, Barrister Lawal Orisadare, on behalf of concerned indigenes of the local government. The petitioners urged the governor to clearly state the exact location approved for oil exploration to prevent misinformation and tension.
Community leaders alleged that some individuals were using the media to reinterpret Governor Abiodun’s earlier statement that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved oil exploration activities at Tongeji Island. They warned that such narratives could destabilise the host communities.
In a statement issued by the Ogun State Government, Governor Abiodun was quoted as saying during a courtesy visit by the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, that the President had approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island.

However, conflicting reports later surfaced in some online media suggesting that the oil exploration project was instead meant for Eba community in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, further heightening concerns among Ipokia indigenes.
