Indian security operatives have arrested a Nigerian woman and an Indian taxi driver after authorities allegedly uncovered 3.6 kilograms of heroin during a targeted anti-narcotics operation in Punjab State.

The arrests were made near the Goindwal bypass along the Amritsar-Bathinda highway in Tarn Taran district following intelligence gathered by the CIA Staff unit of the local police command.

According to police authorities, officers intercepted a grey commercial taxi during the operation and detained the suspects after a search reportedly led to the discovery of the illicit substance concealed in the vehicle.

The Nigerian suspect, identified as Bela, was said to be from Delta State but residing in Delhi, while the second suspect, Dalip Kumar, is a taxi driver from Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

Police officials disclosed that, in addition to the heroin, officers recovered a mobile phone, the vehicle allegedly used for transportation, and a sum of money believed to be linked to drug transactions.

Authorities alleged that the taxi driver assisted in transporting the narcotics in exchange for financial compensation.

Investigators further claimed that the Nigerian woman may have connections to a wider international drug trafficking syndicate reportedly involving smugglers operating across the India-Pakistan border.

Law enforcement officials said preliminary findings suggested that the narcotics were intended for distribution in Punjab, Delhi and other parts of India.

A formal case has reportedly been filed under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, while investigations continue into the alleged trafficking network and possible accomplices.

The latest arrest adds to a growing number of drug-related cases involving Nigerian nationals in India in recent months, as Indian authorities intensify efforts to dismantle international narcotics operations.
