A Nigerian traveller has been penalised by Canadian authorities after being caught attempting to bring over 40 kilograms of undeclared meat products into the country.
The incident occurred at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted the passenger upon arrival from Nigeria. The agency confirmed that the items, which included dried chicken and spiced meat commonly known as kilishi, were concealed in the traveller’s luggage.
According to CBSA, the discovery was made with the assistance of a detector dog that identified the hidden food items during routine screening. The products were immediately seized, and the traveller was issued a fine in line with Canadian import regulations.
Authorities emphasised that all travellers entering Canada are legally required to declare any food, plant, or animal products in their possession. This includes both raw and processed items such as meat, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and related goods.
The agency explained that strict enforcement is necessary due to the potential risks such items pose, including the spread of diseases, invasive species, and threats to public health, agriculture, and the environment.
CBSA further noted that penalties for non-compliance can extend beyond fines to include confiscation of goods, additional charges related to disposal, or even prosecution, depending on the severity of the violation.
The incident has since drawn attention online, with many Nigerians reacting to the unusually large quantity of seized meat, while others stressed the importance of adhering to international travel regulations to avoid sanctions.
