A Nigerian postgraduate student enrolled in a Master of Business Administration programme in the United States has been confirmed dead.
Oreoluwa Odetunde, a first-year MBA candidate at the Cornell University, was found unresponsive in her off-campus apartment on Thursday. The institution disclosed the development in a statement to its academic community.
Odetunde was studying at the S.C. Johnson College of Business, where she had begun her MBA journey as an international student from Nigeria. University officials expressed profound sadness over the incident and extended condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Before relocating to the United States for her graduate studies, she earned a degree in Economics from the University of Lagos in 2017. She later built professional experience in Nigeria’s financial sector, working in research and strategy-related roles at firms including Anchoria Asset Management and Greenwich Merchant Bank.
During her time at Cornell, she was actively engaged in student organisations and professional networks. She participated in the Johnson African Business Society, the Black Graduate Business Association and the Old Ezra Finance Club. She was also recognised as both a Forté Fellow and a Sage Scholar, distinctions awarded to outstanding MBA students.
In a message shared with students and staff, the business school described her passing as a painful loss to the community. The statement noted that counselling and psychological support services had been made available to those affected.
The university further announced that support sessions were organised for members of the college community as they mourn her death. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
