A Nigerian man in the United Kingdom, Gift Oladele, has been convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in North Wales, months after successfully overturning a deportation order linked to an earlier offence.
The 24-year-old was found guilty of the attack, which occurred in September 2025 in Wrexham, and now faces a lengthy prison sentence.
Court records show he had previously been jailed in 2022 for falsely imprisoning a woman in Manchester during a separate incident described as sexually motivated.
Following that conviction, authorities initiated deportation proceedings under UK law. However, an immigration tribunal later ruled in his favour, citing his right to private and family life under human rights provisions.
The tribunal found that he had grown up largely in the UK and would face significant challenges relocating to Nigeria, despite the seriousness of his earlier crime.
After his release, he remained in the UK, where he later committed the latest offence.
The Home Office has described the case as deeply disturbing, reaffirming its position that foreign nationals who commit serious crimes should be removed. Sentencing is expected in the coming weeks.
