A 19-year-old Nigerian-born man, Fawaz Oyedeji, has been sentenced to four years in prison in the United Kingdom for attempting to rob a car owner at gunpoint during a supposed vehicle purchase.

Oyedeji was sentenced on Thursday, November 5, at the Inner London Crown Court after being found guilty of attempted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The incident occurred on March 18, 2025, when Oyedeji arranged to inspect a Porsche Cayenne advertised online for £72,500. He visited the owner's home in Southwark, London, pretending to be interested in purchasing the vehicle.

After inspecting the car, both men sat in the front seats to discuss the proposed sale. However, the meeting took an unexpected turn when Oyedeji brought out what appeared to be a firearm and demanded the vehicle's keys.

The owner resisted the demand, leading to a struggle that forced Oyedeji to abandon the attempt and escape. The victim immediately contacted the police, triggering an investigation.

Detectives used CCTV recordings, dashcam footage, mobile phone records and forensic evidence to identify the suspect. Investigators traced the phone used to arrange the meeting to Oyedeji and established that it had been active around his residence and the location of the attempted robbery.

Additional CCTV footage helped establish his movements before and after the incident, while clothing recovered by officers matched what he was seen wearing during the attack.

Oyedeji was arrested at his Greenwich residence on March 20, less than two days after the incident. He was subsequently convicted on August 12 after a jury found him guilty of both charges following just 26 minutes of deliberation.

Detective Alex Long, who led the investigation, praised the victim for resisting the robbery despite being threatened with what appeared to be a genuine firearm. He also credited the successful prosecution to the cooperation of the victim and the evidence gathered by investigating officers.

The detective advised members of the public to remain cautious when arranging private vehicle sales and to leave any transaction that raises safety concerns.
