Several Nigerian-born politicians have emerged victorious in the November 3, 2026, United States midterm elections, strengthening the growing presence of Nigerians in American politics.
Among the winners are Will Jawando, Junior Ezeonu, Oye Owolewa, Carol Kazeem and Gabe Okoye, who secured victories across different political positions in Maryland, Texas, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
In Maryland, Will Jawando won the Montgomery County executive election, defeating Republican candidate Esther Wells. Results published by NBC Washington showed that Jawando received 237,383 votes, representing 78.15 per cent, while Wells secured 66,383 votes, or 21.85 per cent, with 72 per cent of expected votes counted. Jawando previously served on the Montgomery County Council and is the son of a Nigerian father and an American mother.
In Texas, 27-year-old Junior Ezeonu secured a seat in the state's House of Representatives for District 101. Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Ezeonu previously served on the Grand Prairie City Council after winning election in 2021. He later became the youngest mayor pro tempore in the city's history.
Meanwhile, Oye Owolewa won an at-large seat on the District of Columbia Council in Washington, DC. He reportedly secured 69 per cent of the votes, defeating independent candidate Elissa Silverman, who received 21 per cent. Owolewa, a pharmacist whose parents are Nigerian immigrants, previously served as the district's shadow representative.
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Carol Kazeem successfully defended her seat in the state House of Representatives, representing District 159. She defeated Republican challenger Michael Bannon to secure another term in office.
Georgia also recorded a victory for Nigerian-born politician Gabe Okoye, who won the District 102 race. Okoye, who first entered the Georgia legislature in 2022, represents parts of Gwinnett County.
The victories highlight the increasing participation and electoral success of Nigerian-born politicians in American public life, with several securing positions at state and local government levels.
The November 3 midterm elections are significant to American politics because they determine the composition of Congress, state legislatures and various local government offices halfway through the president's four-year tenure.
