A 27-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested in New Orleans following a domestic attack that claimed the life of his father and left his two sisters injured. The incident occurred late Tuesday evening at the family residence on Pebble Street.
Authorities confirmed that the father, a computer science professor at Southern University at New Orleans, was pronounced dead at the scene from stab wounds. One daughter was treated at a local hospital and discharged, while the second remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Family members described the evening as ordinary before the sudden attack. They noted that the suspect, the son and brother of the victims, has a history of mental health challenges but has never previously exhibited violent behavior. Relatives expressed shock and confusion over what triggered the incident.
Police said the suspect was located in Jefferson Parish shortly after the attack and is currently under medical evaluation. Law enforcement has filed charges including second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Authorities have warned that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
Investigators are focusing on both the suspect’s mental health history and the dynamics within the family to understand what led to the violent outburst. Police have stressed the importance of community awareness regarding domestic violence and mental health issues.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release an official report on the father’s cause of death following an autopsy. Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview family members and neighbors as part of the ongoing investigation.
The attack has left the local community and the Nigerian diaspora in the United States in shock. The case highlights the challenges surrounding mental health care, family dynamics, and domestic safety, prompting calls for greater awareness and preventive support systems.
