The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has disclosed that about 9,000 migrants who returned to Nigeria have received training and reintegration support through a partnership with the Edo State Government.
The announcement was made by IOM’s Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Dimanche Sharon, during a visit to Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House in Benin City.
According to Sharon, the programme is designed to help returning migrants rebuild their lives through skills development, entrepreneurship support, and community reintegration initiatives.
She explained that the intervention is part of ongoing efforts by IOM and the Edo State Government to support individuals who were forced to return after unsuccessful migration journeys.
Sharon also commended the state government for its youth empowerment initiatives, noting that more than 500,000 residents have benefited from various skills development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods.
She added that Edo State has taken important steps to address the root causes of irregular migration by expanding economic opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, and strengthening community awareness.
The IOM chief further stated that the organisation is willing to deepen its collaboration with the state by exploring ways to connect digital skills training with employment opportunities and startup development.
Responding, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with international partners to reduce irregular migration while improving economic prospects for young people in the state.
He noted that insecurity, particularly cult-related violence, had previously contributed to migration pressures but said significant progress had been made in restoring stability and creating an environment that encourages business growth and community development.
